Surely, no one who looks at piracy objectively
can buy into the argument of the entertainment industry?
That every file downloaded is for them a lost sale.
Which is what they try to tell us
in their published figures portrayal.
It's a well lived phenomenon and everyone would agree
that you'd rarely consider paying for
what you could get for free,
but they try to portray downloading as criminal
and depict us all that do it
as thieving and disrespectful.
When in actual fact,
if we couldn't get it for free,
we probably wouldn't buy it from HMV.
We wouldnʼt behave the same way in a store;
itʼs not the same thing as walking out through a door
with something you havenʼt paid for
and donʼt intend to.
Its different because, there, youʼd have gone out of your way to
pilfer something in person that you probably wanted,
whereas online you can just click
and then youʼve effortlessly got it.
The difference is in the mentality behind each action;
physical theft results in a more tangible reaction.
Downloading illegally rarely results in consequence
and therefore isnʼt conceptualised as stealing
with the same significance.
